Throughout the day, middle school students were mentored by older role models from Magic City Campus.

On January 24, 2004, the first nontraditional career workshop for boys was held at Minot High School, Magic City Campus. The workshop was open to students in grades 8-11. Nineteen boys braved the cold January day to attend. Nontraditional careers are careers where 75 percent or more of the workers are the opposite gender. The purpose of this workshop was to expose boys to nontraditional career opportunities for their consideration.

Ssgt Don E Jones from the U.S. Army Recruiting station in Minot talked briefly about the army during lunch. He offered handouts to any of the boys who were interested. Talking to such a young audience is a good way to plant seeds for the future.

For the final event of they day there was a fear factor challenge. Each group of students were required to finish their plate of delicacies. Included on the plate was whole canned squid, boiled quail eggs, longan (lychee fruit) in a special sauce to make them look like bloody eye balls, fried anchovies, black fungus mushrooms, and sardines in mustard and tomato sauce. They were allowed to remove the squid head and viscera before eating.
